Story Vines

I enjoyed learning about story vines in class 6 of EDCI 402. Story vines are a way to take the key or main points from a story in a fun and creative way. I think this is a great way to bring art into ELA! Story vines help to make connections with the key points from a story to help with the process of retelling a story. I think stories make a lot more sense when we can make connections with them. I think everyone takes away messages from stories differently and so I think it would be interesting to see what students consider the key points vs what I consider the key points. Oral language is also an important component of the ELA curriculum and I think it would be a fun way for students to share their creation with their classmates at the same time as retelling the story. I think this makes for so much learning all together! During my practicum I will be teaching a unit about the water cycle and a story I would like to focus on for one lesson is “Water Warrior” by Autumn Peltier. I think creating a story vine from this story will be a great way to connect Science with ELA and will be an excellent way to help students further their understanding of the story!

Here are my key ideas of my story vine based on The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch:

The crown: represents the first part of the story being a beautiful princess named Elizabeth who lives with Prince Ronald in a castle with expensive clothes.

Dragon and Fire: One day a fire breathing dragon destroys the castle including all of Elizabeth’s clothes and takes away Prince Ronald.

Paper bag dress: Elizabeth is only left with a paper bag to wear.

Dragons Door: Elizabeth follows the dragon to his Den by following the path of burnt forests and bones he left behind.

World: After the dragon shows Elizabeth he can burn100 forests Elizabeth asks if he can fly around the world in 10 seconds and so he does and when he arrives back Elizabeth tells him to do it again. The dragon is so exhausted that he falls asleep.

Heart Paper Bag Dress: Elizabeth tries waking the dragon up but can’t and is then able to enter the Den to get her Prince. However Prince Ronald is very rude to Elizabeth and tells her how horrible and dirty she looks and tells her to “come back when she is dressed like a real princess.”

The Sun: Elizabeth lives happily ever after and doesn’t marry Prince Ronald telling him he is a bum despite his nice looking hair and clothes.
