Since it is near the end of my free inquiry blogposts, I wanted to look into something I have been really interested in and I think would be beneficial for both student teachers, teachers, students, and really anyone in the community who would be interested in finding activities/resources for practising mindfulness in Cranbrook. In this post I will list some businesses and activities that I think can help with practising mindfulness and I will also discuss activities I like to do in Cranbrook to practise mindfulness.

Yoga:

For obvious reasons, yoga is a really great way to practise mindfulness and I find when I am stressed or need something else to focus on to calm my nerves, yoga is a great way to do it. I believe yoga is good for both teachers and students and although the businesses I recommend may not be affordable for all students, there are so many other ways yoga can be brought into the classroom. I know of a few instructors who will even come into the schools to teach it to a class!

  1. Inner Roar Yoga and Wellness:

Address: 405 11 Ave S, Cranbrook, BC V1C 2R1

Phone(250) 464-0156

Although I have not been to this yoga studio before, I have herd really good things about it and I would definitely consider trying it out! I wasn’t able to find anything about their pricing as it looks like they have not updated their website, however I have heard that it’s fairly reasonable and the instructors are really good too.

Something I also discovered was that they have a website called Inner Roar Tv (https://www.inner-roar.tv/) and you can practise yoga right from home uses their guided video classes. I think this is a great option for those who still aren’t super comfortable being in smaller spaces with others to prevent getting Covid right now.

I have put a photo below including the prices I found on the website and they also offer a 7 day free trial:

2. Mountain Life Hot Yoga:

I am personally not a really big fan of hot yoga, however if you are this is another business I have heard really good things about.

Address: 9 12th Ave S, Cranbrook, BC V1C 2R8

Phone(250) 432-5141

Drop in classes are $17 and you can also look into getting punch passes, monthly passes, and year passes on their website https://www.mountainlifehotyoga.ca/prices.

I also discovered that they offer 5 day retreats in Mazatlan Mexico, which I could see being fun if that’s what your into (5 days of guided yoga and 7 days to do whatever you wish). Here is the link the find out more about that: https://www.mountainlifehotyoga.ca/retreats. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is in a students budget, however I thought it was something worth mentioning.

3. Kootenay Therapy Center:

Address: 1311 2 St N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3L1

Phone(250) 426-4629

Kootenay Therapy centre doesn’t only offer yoga but they also offer Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Registered Message Therapy, Exercise Occupational Therapy, Clinical Counselling and additional classes. I have done yoga here before and I really enjoyed it. My grandma also does exercise classes here and finds it really enjoyable as well. I think it’s worthwhile mentioning that teachers do get benefits with their job and with these benefits comes health benefits which includes things like registered message therapy, acupuncture etc… (I should mention that there is a limited amount you can use meaning they do run out).

Here is the link to their website: https://www.kootenaytherapycenter.com/

4. The Studio

The studio is a company located in the Western Financial Place that offers Spin, Barre classes, and yoga.

Address: 1777 2 St N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 6L9

Phone(250) 919-0170

Here is the pricing:

What I like about participating in activities such as Barre and Spin is that once you book a class you are committed to going. I think many people have found classes such as spin classes a really good activity for their overall health and well-being and is something that not only offers exercise but allows you to socialize with others and put your mind somewhere else to let go of some of the worries.

(I always like looking at the Lululemon clothes in their window when I come into work lol)

5. Here are the activities I like doing in Cranbrook to practise mindfulness:

-Swimming: my goal this semester has been to swim 5 days a week and I’m really glad I’ve stuck to it as I’ve found that it makes me feel so good and allows me to take my mind off of things I may be worried or stressed out about.

-Hiking: I’m not much of an overnight hiker because I don’t particularly like to sleep in a tent in the middle of the forest where I might get eaten by a bear, but I do like day hiking and some of the ones that I go on most often are Eager Hill, Potato Beaut, the Bee Line and other short ones around our area. I think it’s super beneficial to go outside and get fresh air and we live in such a beautiful area that it’s worth taking advantage of it.

-Cross Country Skiing: I personally prefer cross country skiing over downhill skiing and the South Star Trails up Gold Creek are really nice to ski on (and free) and the Nordic Trails in Kimberley by the ski hill are also beautiful to ski on and are well groomed (and still affordable). Once again a great way to practise mindfulness by getting fresh air.

-Lake swimming: In the summertime I enjoy lake swimming rather than swimming in the pool some of the lakes I like to swim in include: Lake Slocan, Kootenay Lake, Norbury Lake, Jim Smith Lake etc….

This is a photo of Lake Slocan which is a beautiful lake to swim in. My family and I often go to New Denver each summer which I highly recommend visiting as it’s located in such a beautiful area of the West Kootenays.
