In this week’s reflection I will be reflecting on the following topics I took away from this week’s technology class. Firstly, I will discuss what I took away from the FIPPA lesson and how it will impact me as a teacher, and then I will elaborate on the way students can benefit from inquiry based learning. The information I learned this week regarding FIPPA guidelines was extremely helpful, although I did find it a bit overwhelming to take it all in, I’m really glad there is a guideline resource I can refer back to throughout the Education program and when I become a teacher. I am a lifeguard at the swimming pool and for a long time we allowed parents and patrons to take photos of their friends/family at swimming lessons or during public swim time. However, we now have a rule we are trying to enforce to parents and patrons that photos are no longer allowed at the pool. At first I didn’t understand what the big deal was about taking photos of your own kids and friends at the pool, however after we discussed the privacy and child protection concerns I completely understand why now. As a future teacher, this is something that I will have to remember on a daily basis, as I could be taking photos for parents to see what their kids are up to in class, posting photos on a social media page, or sending photos to be published in the newspaper it will be important for me to remember that not every parent may feel comfortable with their child being included in these photographs. Additionally, I liked how Allison recommended we create our own consent forms along with the one provided by the school so that as the teacher we can make sure we are covered, by providing information regards to what exactly the photo will be used for. In terms of the benefits of inquiry based learning I believe there are many benefits, however the biggest one that stands out to me is that students can learn about something that interests them and that they care about that will hopefully also be meaningful to them in the future. I’m really excited to begin the inquiry project for this class because I believe I will be learning about something I can bring to the classroom when I’m a teacher that will be a positive contribution to my students learning.
